Here is the short version of what I see happening.
A typical alternately stacked EI-Core is very nonlinear with small amounts of applied AC or DC. Essentially the areas around the small gaps saturate first effectively creating an airgap. Beyond a small amount of DC this nonlinear behavior disappears and a rather liner device is realized.
Inductance and Q of a UTC LS-63 with increasing levels of AC
AC fixed and increasing DC.
