It's a long time ago, but I also recall the Svetlana sounding very close to the WE. Unfortunately far too many of them developed filament warping into the cathode far too rapidly. I don't suppose any have been made in the last decade or so. Too bad - an improvement program, well applied over time, could have made them the kings.
The Czechoslovakian makers, especially EML, put a lot of creative effort into solving their initial fragile-filament problem for example, and they continue to refine their product. If such technical efforts are going on elsewhere, I don't seem to be hearing about them - I mostly hear about market-attractive tricks like coated glass and perforated plates. But before we can advance the state of the art, we must restore the lost critical parts of it. IMHO they are our best bet - if they get enough support to continue refining the product, it will become more and more the best option. I don't play in the cost-no-object sandbox so it's a little inappropriate for me to say this, but there you are.
