Broad questions! I have tried different applications of series regulation in preamps and have not liked it. I have also tried shunt regulation in my phono and line stages and thought it made a great improvement. Allen Wright, whose work I respect a great deal, was a big proponent of shunt regulation and frankly, I was hooked after listening to some of Gary Pimm's work; someone else I highly admire. In my DC coupled 2A3 amp I use a lazy variation on shunt regulation which is to bleed a heavy amount of current off the PS prior to the driver stage, but I've not applied it to the output stage, I suspect there would be sonic benefit there as well.
