the early sony playstation one is the best cd player that i have heard. they just dont have the digital glare / grunge that most cd players have. but it has to be a very specific model - google will help you there, i think that a stereophile article gave the movement some steam.
you can find audiophile-modified playstation ones on AA Trader now and then.
