It should be safe as you describe, though I too would try to avoid any relay circuits. If you're really concerned, a damper diode for the 2A3 stage would perform the same function.

By the way, I tried a Telefunken 6V4 years ago and it was pure garbage, IMO. I like the 6X4 though - especially the Tungsol military version.
