I cannot speak for others, but the Don Allen player that I really like is the "tube" output with the heavy metal plate. Don's latest iteration is all solid-state, and in some systems, it really sings, but I still prefer the 6BQ7 (or variant) output.
The sound? The 745 Philips design uses a simple digital filter that has good "time resolution" (at the expense of flat response), and with the modifications, it possess a smooth, resolute sonic character, with microdynamics that is rare for any CD playback, let alone inexpensive CD playback.
