I certainly agree that you need to start with consideration of your room size and speaker efficiency to target the power output of your amp. The more efficient your speakers, the lower power you need, the more options you have in what output tubes your amp has. If you start with speakers that will work with a 45 amp, you will be in a good position to try others in the future – 2A3, 300B, etc. I happen to be a big fan of 45 based amps and have used them in a 20 X 30 room with 105 dB Klipschorns and in a 10 X12 home office with 92 dB monitor speakers.

Sadly, I lack the skill/knowledge to build my own equipment. If you can build your own, you will stand a much better chance of getting and amp/pre for $1,000. I have used the Classified section here and Audiogon to purchase used amps with good results. 45 amps come up less frequently than 2A3 and 300B amps, but they can be found. One thing I have found is that a good amp with volume controls is typically a substantial savings because you don’t need a preamp, and, in most cases, sounds better then an amp/preamp combo. Certainly something to consider if you are building your own.
