Lots of different answers and here's another - how about a transformer volume control (TVC) with remote control? Asylum sponsor DIY Hi-Fi Supply just happens to have one (see link below).

If your source can drive your amp and you have an optimal source output impedance/amp input impedance ratio, this could be one of your better options.
