Go for full range signal to your SET and parallel off to the sub amp (must have a steep filter in line to sub to keep all mids and highs out or it will muddy things up). If you have enough gain and low enough OP impedance you don't need a Pre but if a Pre is needed stick with tubes. A pre is easy to build or modify. If you already have a reasonable candidate you will get plenty of advice to improve it on Tube DIY (assuming you have the tools and the skill).

The good news from your description is that you can sill improve your system considerably. Your SET is most likely the strongest link in the chain by a good margin!
