A few years ago I put together the best system I could afford: homebrew JE Labs modified 45/2a3 amp, Cain and Cain Abbys, a Hsu sub, playing a Rega Planet CD, and various tuners and recently the Roku internet radio tuner. I am using an Acurus Act 3 digital pre I picked up very cheaply at an auction. I live in Pittsburgh, and know no one using a set amp, so don't know if I am realizing its potential. It sounds good, but I don't know if I can improve it with a tube pre, and i have a little extra cash to invest.
That being said, I have both a pas-3x and a Citation I in fair working condition. I would fix up one of these if it were the general consensus this would improve my system, but I also must admit to loving the remote, as well the added dimension of the sub.
I know I can't have it all, but would appreciate suggestions as to whether I should:
1.fix up a tube pre I already own. If so, can I add a remote volume control after-market?
2. sell the acurus and maybe a tube pre, and buy a newer pre with a sub output and remote
3. Sit back and enjoy the music, and invest the money in nos 12ax7 tubes.
I would appreciate any opinions. I have to say it is strange to have a wonderful sounding setup and not know if I can do better. The one thing that won't be replaced is the set amp. I am a believer. thank you in advance for your help.
Sam
