I am afraid I can be accused of being an ampoholic. I think I owned about a dozen tube amps before the Cavalier, and about the same after. Most of the amps I now have were made by John Hogan. I do seem to have a preference for the richness of their midrange and don’t mind the somewhat clunky appearance.
My Cavalier had Teflon coupling caps and Cy set it up so I could go inside and sever the link between a couple of capacitors in order to try using something like a 6A5G for the output tube. I tried it, but the bias could not be adjusted low enough to make it work properly. I did like the amp, but had two of the Hogan amps at the time and wanted to try some others, so I sold the Cavalier. I was sorry to see it go. So little time, so many amps to try.
If I ever win the lottery, I would certainly consider having Cy build a couple of custom amps. I know he spoke about someday designing an amp that would use the 845 up to its full potential by running it at 1,350 V.
I hope you enjoy trying some alternative output tubes in your amp and find just the right sound to fit your tastes.
