Hi Neff,
I believe you are on the right track. Do not worry at all about smearing, and don't sweat adding plate chokes. Thats the small stuff, misses the "big picture". You are right...this amp will be WAY superior on your load than any P-P 300B amp.
When you parallel output tubes, you get only 3 dB more gain, but, you get four times the peak current capability, which is exactly what the voice coil of your inefficient speaker wants to see for control. Additionally, your output transformer uses a primary at half the value as it would if it were a non-paralleled tube, so your effective bandwidth is improved with the lower Z output transformer. Thats the bottom line and big picture.
Just use a good power supply and conservative tube operating points, and you will enjoy the hell out of your build. I'd use the dirt cheap JJ KT-88s with conservative op points, as the JJs are said to be really good when installed in a properly engineered amp.
