You wouldn't believe the big name commercial amps I've had in my system in the early stages trying to get it to sound right. I think my home brew Phono stage helps a whole lot too but nothing I've tried comes close to the sound I've been getting from this SET in the past five years or so or it’s single OP tube predecessor.

Good comment on gain but only the first two stages provide it. The driver is a White CF and this is only there to provide an exceptionally low OP impedance to drive the pair of 845s into grid current when needed. I was sceptical but had to try it. It’s hard to believe that it does it with zero evidence of any transition through to positive grid volts. In fact I'm sure it could drive a quad of 845s!

With virtually no distortion of it’s own the previous 1578 stage pretty much determines the overall distortion at the OP and I’ve found some interesting things here too. Like lower current in this stage coupled with higher current in the OP stage does a better job of cancelling distortion at the OP and leads to incredibly good distortion characteristics across the spectrum. Even more interesting is how easy it is to hear the difference, a much sweet sound is the best way I could describe it.

The 1578 stage is also interesting in another respect. One half is providing a quasi CCS for the other but with a choke in lieu of the plate R it's amazing what this does to improve linearity at the high voltage swings necessary to drive the 845s properly.

I’d have loved to try some MV rectifiers but being pressed for time kinda determined my decision to build my creation into a ready made chassis, and the tube sockets already there determined my tube compliment to a large extent. One day I may start from scratch and MVs will be top of my list.

BTW, I’d love to hear some of those vintage 845s you have in your stash!

Regards,
Naz
