Bias is essentially fixed but controlled by a previous stage however variable Cathode Rs in each leg of the OP tubes provide the fine balance.
The efficiency of this arrangement puts it close to PP but all the SET magic is retained. In reality more than 90% of the music lives in A1 but its great having so much headroom for dynamic peaks, something you get a lot of on old vinyl as you know!
What many here would not have experienced is the beauty of SET on huge full range speakers. You don't have to have high efficiency speakers to enjoy SET and what you MAY lose (I'm yet to be convinced) in nuance you gain in lifelike scale ... a full size, 3D image in your music room is very intoxicating.
