"hogging" and doing all the work is mostly occurs because both the plate and cathode are in parallel at dc. If either are seperate at dc, they'll share nicely. If both are common at dc (with no servo to balance them), there can be problems.
Play safe and play longer! Don't be an "OUCH!" casualty.
Unplug it, discharge it and measure it (twice) before you touch it.. . .Oh!. . .Remember: Modifying things voids their warranty.
