I have a parallel 6sn7/300b amp built by John Hogan. The amp was originally built for someone in NJ, and then it got sold to someone in Texas, and now it is back in Jersey in my possession. I traded another JH amp for it.
I am very happy to have gotten this amp. I loved it from the moment I heard it. I am very happy with the sound and the application that I use it for.
I am using it for somewhat SET friendly speakers: Galante Symphonies which are around 98-99 db sensitivity. But I found these speakers a little more power hungry than you might imagine, and when I tried to get the volume I wanted with a 300b, there was too much clipping. I found the clipping/distortion whether I used a 45 or a 300b. Maybe the problem was something else, but the parallel amp seems to solve it.
Whatever it is, the extra 5, 6, or so watts, makes the difference in this application.
I am pretty certain that John used the same power transformer in this amp as the other SETS he build which is the rather large power transformer from the vintage amps. These are very substantive power transformers and they don't cost that much. Plus he used the same vintage opts as his other SE amps. So that is a big reason I like the sound right off the bat.
I have not done a side by side comparison with a regular 6sn7/300b but I could do so if requested. I thought at first maybe the parallel amp is even better, but then hearing the regular 6sn7/300b I thought maybe that sounded better. So I just left it at that: it does not matter to me. The parallel amp has a special application.
I could compare them both on speakers where gain was not an issue and let you know. I could also compare the parallel to an 845 with similar components.
I would say a parallel is definitely a go when you need somewhat more power than a regular 300b can provide. All the other attributes of SE sound are there. I would say it is a pretty excellent solution for an amp that you love and just need a little more power.
