Being a big fan of Don gear too, I give a comment or 2.
I dont think Don's stuff has a sort of signature sound to it, other than it just sounds damn good. Its all designed to have that, disappear into the background effect. Ive heard it against DiyHiFi LD+WE91 and it killed it.
Don is a tell me what you want and thats how its done. Sure he has designs he likes to do often but he also does custom work too within reason. I know, so far I have 2 pieces that Don never did before, a very elaborate pre with a tape out and subwoofer out and a single chassis stereo 300B power amp. No they were not monumental challenges (well the pre was a pain in Don's own words), but he will try and accommodate a request.
And so far no one has ever complained about being ripped off by Don, cough Welborne. Knowing Don as well as I have gotten to know him, countless hrs on the phone with him and many thousands $ spent, I think I can say Don doesnt have a lick of that type in him.
My 2 cents
Dave
