The sound should be much improved. Not familiar with the amp,but are you sure it isn't the driver that is worn out? 12AU7s and other small signal tubes fade in a number of ways: top end roll off, compression, noise increase, bad oscillation etc. Small signal tubes don't last too long either, only a couple years.
