Dumb question - how to tell valves are spent?

Using a CARY CAD 300B monobloc pair. In the absence of a valve meter (tube tester) how do I tell the valves are due for replacement? Are there any characteristic sonic or physical indicators to look out for? How much usage should one expect from Electro harmonix 300b valves?
I only ask because the amps seem much less enjoyable than first we met!
