Hi PeterH-son,A great passive preamp is not, and cannot be called a "racket".
In the BEST systems, passive preamps, carefully designed and built to extremely LOW-LOSS standards are used to eliminate unneccessary extra stages of amplification and also to minimize the use of too many interconnects.
The idea is to avoid losing musical dynamics, nuance, and bandwidth when too many parts and stages of amplification are used.
In this regard it is also necessary to eliminate all coupling capacitors and interstage transformers.
Perhaps you may have a friend who has made tape recordings from tape recordings. The musical losses are huge. In a similar way, too many active parts, interconnects and wiring will cause the same kinds of musical losses.
The Serious Stereo system is as good as it is possible to build. Perhaps you can benefit from this approach. View Dennis' audio work at http://www.seriousstereo.com
