Are you sure that's a pro for the 211? The new Chinese 845s are pretty darn good and dirt cheap.
This is a good topic. Recently I participated in a listening session that compared amps from the same maker identical in all ways except for 211 vs. 845 output. Circuits, driver tubes, and power supplies all identical.
The amps could hardly have sounded more different. A lot of people like to say things like "the output tube is only one part of the circuit - the drivers, circuit, output iron, etc., all have as much or more bearing". Maybe so, but the output tube itself has a lot of say in the sound.
1st observation was that the bass of the 845 was better - in another league. The speakers were backloaded horn single-drivers - with a 211 they needed a sub IMO and with the 845, definitely not. Deeper and stronger.
That's a distinct advantage for the 845. The other differences were more matters of taste. The 845 is more laid back in the mids and a bit darker - the 211 is more forward and lit-up. On these speakers, the 845 was the hands-down fave, but this would be very system dependent.
Hope that helps.
