Welborne Review

24.86.118.106

This is not a review of a Welborne amplifier. This is a review of my expereince with Welborne Labs.

In April of 2006 I ordered an assembled Welborne Terraplane from the company's web site.

A day after I ordered the amp, my credit card was billed.

The amp arrived 6 months after I ordered it. (Some of the delay was the fault of Fedex, but mostly the delay was due to Welborne.) The amp came with an explnation that the TJ 300B's that were supposed ot accompany it were on back-order and that a loaner pair of Sovtek 300B's were included. I told Welborne that I did not want to have to bother shipping the Sovteks back and that they should just bill me for them, which they prompty did.

The Sovtek's did not last long, one of them stopped working within a month of when I received them. I tried contacting Welborne to see if they would replace them, but I did not receive a reply. In January of 2007 I simply mailed them back with a letter. I have written them several times about this issue but have not received a reply.

About 8 months after I ordered the amp, I received a message form Welborne that the TJ 300B's are not available and that I could opt for a different pair of tubes or for a refund. I opted for the refund, which I have not recevied.

Welborne did answer some of my communications. Particularly, my techical questions were answered in a helpful way.

While I still have used limited combinations of equipment, all the good things that people have said on this site about the sound quality of the amps appear to be true.

The Welborne web site states that the amps do not hum. This is true, at least with my 92 dB speakers. However, the Welborne site does not tell you that the amps emit a low level buzzz. Welborne told me that the buzz diminishes with break-in and this appears to be true.

Welborne does not answer the telephone and only answers some of the correspondence sent to them.

The result of all of this is that I have a Welborne amp which works very well, but I am still short 2 pairs of tubes which I paid for. Any suggestions?
