Putting the system between the speakers is the way to go in order to make the cables as short as possible but you should use some low raise shelf pushed on the very back of the wall or it will affect the soundstage. In my experience and with all the kind of speakers, have a tall equipment stand between the speakers is always a bad idea (I know Ethan will not agree on this). Currently I'm using some not very tall rack (about 2 feet tall) on the left side and I'm running long speakers cables (12 ft). It's also a "no way" to put the rack in the corner as I've saw very often (especially with a turntable). My very humble opinion.
