Equipment Rack Placement

What are the advantages/disadvantages to placing the equipment rack behind and between the speakers versus off to the side and in front of the speakers?

I have a 14x20x8 foot room, the speakers on a short wall, the system off to the left side and in front of the speakers, a bay window on the right side with heavy draperies. I also have a 7 foot opening next to the rack area directly and to the left of my sitting location, front door and bay window on the other long wall. The 7 foot opening will eventually be closed with French doors but that's down the road.

I'm in the process of redecorating the room, wallpaper removal, painting, carpet, etc and am just wondering what would be the best location for the equipment rack, I have the TT on a wall shelf and the rack is a simple homemade job, 4 - 1 inch threaded rods and MDF for shelves. No wife involved, just a gf so no headaches in that department.
