Hi David,
My main purpose for the room would be two channel stereo as I am big into vinyl and R2R. If I also have surround in this room it is secondary and I would do a 5.1 system and the screen would probably be in the mid 30" range. My main two speakers were built by my father and have usable bass to 25 Hz (hence I would probably not have a sub in the room) and go out to 42kHz; basically full range. As this would be a dedicated l;istening room I would have free reign to place speakers wherever I want. I don't plan on having a lot of furnature in the room, but I will probably place selves of records (I have close to 4,000 lps in the room. Should I place them along the back wall to act as a diffuser or at the side walls at the first reflection points? I could make them symetrical on both sides. I can not make the room any longer, but can change my height lower (not higher) and have some play with my width. Due to the layout I must place the door on the long wall so I don't want it to interfer with the first reflection point, yet don't want it to close to the opposite wall of the speakers in case I do set up a surround system.
As respects surround it would seem to me that the surround speakers are better at ear level(?) as the main speakers or is it ok to mount them higher on the wall? If I do surround I probably won't have matching drivers. I know this is not ideal, but I have apair of B&W DM302's laying around that would work for the time being. I would probably try to get a B&W center channel speaker so at least the center and surrounds are similar. Again not ideal, but my main purpose is two channel stereo.
Thanks,
Scott
