Take a look at "acoustic lag bolts" (also called "acoustic lag screws") for hanging things from joists. These are used to hang the gridwork for acoustic tile drop ceilings. They have a point on one end, a wood screw thread, and the other end is flat with a hole for attaching a wire. They come in lengths from three to five inches; a box of 50 costs around $10. Pros drive them into joists with a special socket that fits the flat end of the bolt and chucks into a drill, but you could drive them with a pair of pliers. My carpenter told me about these things. I used acoustic lag bolts to hang some diffusors in my room using 100 pound - rated braided picture wire.
A word of advice: be extra - careful whenever you drill into a ceiling. Drill a small pilot hole just far enough to puncture the ceiling, then stop. Push a piece of wire up through the pilot hole to check that you're really drilling into a joist and not into a pipe or electrical wire. You can't always trust a stud finder; it can be fooled by large ABS pipe. I learned this the hard way, and I also learned that it's really, really hard to find a plumber who will make a house call on New Year's Day.
