First reflections are said to cause coloration and modifications of spatial aspects.
I have quite some technical/scientific papers on this subject and as far as coloration is concerned, the available evidence suggests that reflections are no problem. Also Linkwitz in a recent paper (Room reflections misunderstood?, AES paper 7162) makes comments in that sense.
As far as spatial aspects are concerned, there is, alas, not much evidence. The evidence that is available is not conclusive because it uses artificial test signals or does not present sufficient details about test procedure and/or results.
I used to consider first reflections as an issue that had to be addressed. Having read what I read first reflections for me have become a non-issue. There are exceptional cases in which first reflections might be an issue, so in such cases one might benefit from acoustic treatment.
I've prepared a literature review on this first reflection issue. In case you're interested, mail me off-board.
