Where's my low bass?

Hi folks,

I've been thinking for a while that my room/system's lower bass response wasn't what it ought to be. I finally went out and bought a RadioShack analog meter. I've got Stereophile test CD 2, and I used track 16 to test the lower bass response.

I've got Vandersteen 2ce Signature speakers, which are rated +/- 3dB from 29Hz to 29 kHz. Here's what I got with my radioshack meter, A-weighted, slow response:

f (Hz) Amplitude (dB)
200 70
160 68.3
125 71.5
100 68.8
80 63
63 61.6
50 56
40 50 (pegged)

This is with the volume set quite loud; I tried turning it up more to get those lows into the meter's range, but the speaker started rattling. I thought maybe I needed more power (my amp is only 60 W/channel, on the low end of the spec for those speakers), but I'm already rattling the woofers. In other words, it sounds as if my room can't support musically significant low bass with these speakers.

What causes this? Is there anything, other getting a subwoofer or two, that I can do about it?
