Hi Hu,
> what sort of product would you suggest for that broad band absorption? <
I'm in the business so I'm biased toward my own company, but you won't go wrong with RealTraps.
> please tell me why all that absorption right behind my head wont suck all the life and ambience out of the room by killing 'good reflections' if there are such things?? <
There are "good" reflections, but "early" reflections, which are those that arrive sooner than about 20 milliseconds, are never good.
> How do you keep people from tripping over the speaker cables running to the left speaker <
I deal mainly with theory, not specific advice for how to rearrange the furniture in your room. If you can post a photo of your room I might be able to suggest something.
> BTW-- agree on cheaper cables vs. expensive-- but not always. WISH I could find cheaper cables that werent just good--- but REALLY good. I have listened to maybe 30 pairs in the last two years at many price points-- and unfortunately, my taste seems pricier-- and no, I dont think it's all an illusion). <
It is all an illusion. It really is. Unless the wire is outright defective - which happens with some brands of expensive wire that aim to impart a sound of their own. See THIS article.
