David, I considered mentioning in the original post that you were a big contributor to my room tuning originally, if you recall.

I knew the main comments would be to put more "stuff" in there (bookcases, etc.) to break up and absorb reflections better. I may try that again. I moved them out to a spare bedroom.

I like the "barren" approach because it allows me to fire the speakers straight ahead. This is partially an aesthetic thing as I hate looking at toed-in speakers. But I also like the slight treble roll off that 15-20 degrees off axis provides. Judging by speaker measurements, everything seems to gel around 15 degrees off axis (although you admittedly have to take frequency response measurements with a grain of salt since everyone uses a different methodology).

I will say that I don't like high frequencies at all, even ultra clean ones. And this is problematic for me since everything made these days goes flat to 20kHz no sweat (not to mention the HF "issues" that all digital apparently has to some degree or another).

I have a lot more panels. I've toned down the absorption quite a bit in recent months. I've learned that you can overdamp a room. In retrospect I would have bought more 1" thick panels as they affect the upper bass a lot less than 2". The small room and tricky (near square) dimensions conspire to make speakers hard to integrate bass-wise. The current speakers are a bit light in the mid- and upper bass. This is good but I still miss those polycones sometimes.
