there is one argument in favour of most of the optimum dimension ratios suggested like the Cardas golden mean proportion of roughly 1:1.6:2.6.
Simply put, most of the suggested optimum ratios produce rooms which have reasonable proportions for placing an audio system in. They aren't long and narrow which makes things very awkward, they aren't square or cubes which even in real life situations with non-rigid walls and furniture do tend to reinforce some modes, and they avoid ratios like 3:2 which can also do the same to a lesser extent.
Choosing or building a room with such a ratio won't avoid standing waves or guarantee a first class listening room but at least it gives you a fair deal of flexibility in placement options which other ratios and odd room shapes don't provide. Despite the truth of your comments about ideal ratios, I would love to have such a room of reasonable size in which to place my system simply because of the flexibility such room proportions provide. My own room is not 'ideal' in terms of proportions and shape and that has meant that I've had to work a lot harder to get results that please me.
