This defies my experience. The last time this came up, I think at the AVS forum, one guy said what you said, and 30 others said that defies their experience too. Maybe you have a very large room? Or maybe you never even tried this yourself and you're just reporting what you read? Every recording studio designer I'm aware of recommends that all first reflections be avoided either by applying absorption, or by deflecting the walls 30+ degrees to direct the reflections behind the listener. One of my customers is Universal Studios where they have a ton (almost literally) of our products in dozens of 5.1 mix rooms. I had a discussion about early reflections with their chief engineer, and he told me he aims for even more absorption than I do. This is not to say that the "minority opinion" can't be right! But I don't know of anyone who listens to music for a living who agrees with this opinion.
