Klaus,
This is the great thing about acoustics - it's both a science and an art. One man's "better" is another's "worse," and nobody can say either is wrong.

Yes, but the improvement with absorption is so incredibly obvious to me I can't understand how anyone would argue. But that's okay! You can disagree and you're entitled to your opinion. From my perspective, the increase in clarity with absorption at all reflection points is very easy to hear. Without absorption the sound is clearly heard coming from the speakers. With absorption the speakers disappear and everything gets bigger and wider and better defined. Reverb and ambience embedded in the music also become much easier to hear.
This is very easy to demonstrate to visitors in my living room, and I haven't found anyone yet who prefers a lack of absorption. In my case I have them stand behind the couch, which is outside the "reflection-free" zone. Then when they lean forward over the couch, the absorption is active and everything suddenly improves. Anyone here who happens to live near me in western Connecticut is welcome to arrange a visit to compare for themselves.
