The device you are referring to is a passive resonator. It is used to redirect sound energy without absorbing. It maintains the liveliness of the music without the slap echo basically. It is typically florr to ceiling and should be very rigid, often but not always filled with insulation.
Should you use it? It works in context with the rest of the room. We use it in many of our designs but it works in conjunction with the rest of the design.
