Many will tell you the thinner panel will do. Image shifting due to reflections is primarily perceived in the higher frequencies. For just that purpose, even 1 inch thick fiberglass might suffice. However, keep in mind that the majority of sound that reaches your ears is via room reflections. A thin panel will skew tonality. It really is best to use 4 inch panels and mount them with a bit of space between the panel and wall.
In most cases improvements perceived aren't due to any affect on image shifting, the threshold for which is fairly high, but due to attenuation of poor off-axis behaviour in average loudspeakers. Whether diffusion or absorption, it helps going as broadband as possible.
