The goal is to cover all wall (and ceiling) surface areas you can identify using a mirror. It's also possible to calculate the area, but a mirror is often easier. I prefer to have the panels be at least a foot larger in all directions than what's needed. This way you can lean forward and back, or slouch down and sit up tall, and never be out of the "protected" area.
