RE: Troublesome Mantle

Yeah, the problem exactly . . . I'm reluctant to crap up that part of the room (the part you can't see isn't as nice).

The problem is, when I say in the fireplace it isn't much of an exaggeration, the rear legs of the chair are sitting on the hearthstone and I the mantle shelf is over my head. It's kind of uncomfortable. Plus I can't put furniture behind the speakers. The room is only 14' deep and to get a nice sense of depth and good balance, the speakers want to be half way out in to the room, so I can't pull the chair far forward. Whereas it works very nicely when I'm facing the fireplace, since the entranceway and fireplace and closet, where I couldn't put furniture anyway, are behind the speakers.

It did occur to me that I could put bookcases on either side of the fireplace, with some kind of door, to flush everything out without a treatment look. But I want to try Ethan's idea first. There's a closet door behind the right hand speaker and if I put a bookcase there I'd have to move the door to the hall.
