You can get tons of stuff from IKEA, or get some professional absorptive panels, then some more diffusion panels. In the end your room would sound good but look terrible.
Or, for the same price you can get a TACT. I suggest looking at a used 2.0S on Audiogon. I had the same problem as you, my room was very lively. I also heard an echo of about one second. But once I installed the TACT into my system I simple couldnt believe my ears. It stripped all my echo's away and flattened out my in room frequency response. As far as I know, TACT is the only brand that corrects impulse response (echo) in the digital domain.
This thing work like a charm, it is the highest recommendation I can give to any stereophile.
