RE: setting up a listening room

That looks like a lot of junk.

It could work but the junk is going to have some acoustic effect so it's hard to say for sure. A lot will depend on whether it's absorptive and, if so, at what frequencies or if it's reflective and, if so, at what angles. You've also got it extending a fair way into the room which pushes the listening position forward. That means you have to push the speakers back towards the wall and a lot will depend on how they respond to wall proximity. I always thought the bottom end and excessive boominess was the only issue but when I shifted to my current house it enabled me to pull my Dynaudio Contour 1.3 SEs out about twice as far from the wall as I'd previously had them. The bass became more natural but what surprised me was that the treble became less hard, sweeter, and the sense of air and spaciousness increased drastically. I think wall proximity has effects in all areas of the frequency spectrum so I'd rather have the speakers out well into the open and the listening position back against the wall if possible.

Ethan takes a different view to me about listening close to the wall, and he prefers short wall placement. With that much junk you may be better off going short wall placement. It will probably give you the freedom to put a little more space behind the speakers while maintaining the same listening distance. You'll still have the same concern about acoustic properties of the junk.
