As much as you can manage, at least for bass trapping.

Yes, that's a great place to hide treatment.

Yes, but it depends on how you define "decently flat." In truth, if you can get the bass response to within a 10 dB window, and all ringing below 300 Hz to less than 200 milliseconds, you're doing really well.
