Great question. A ROM drive is 10% controllable by us where a standard CD or SACD drive is not. When manufacturers produce standard drives they build in all the speed controls, error correction, reading stuff etc. In other words, the commands we need to make a standard CD drive work are simple "do this", "do that" type commands and what we get out is a complete digital data stream, complete with clock etc.
The ROM drive gives us 100% control and we take advantage of it.
