P500 newbie, need advice on settings

I just received a reconditioned P500, and have not had much time to play around with the voltage, waveform and frequency settings. For now I'm at 117v in the auto mode. Are the aural effects of the various settings solely dependent on system synergy, or are there any generalizations that owners have come up with over the years?
