John, I think you're on the right track with the tape monitor (if this is the same email). The tape monitor takes the signal right off the phono stage output and routes it to the outputs directly.

The cartridge load is a different story and there's tons of debate on that. Generally, I would recommend 100 Ohms (use a 100 Ohm resistor in the sockets) but you can try higher as well. Higher will sound more open but will require some negative rake on the VTA to make sure it isn't too bright.
