Are you using the computer's D/A converters or is it outputting the digital signal to a processor with good D/A converters? In my experience, D/A converters can make an audible difference. A few years ago I compared the music produced by a relatively inexpensive (but not "cheap") CD player with its own D/A converters once to that produced by the D/A conversion done by my Lexicon fed the digital output from another transport and the sound from the Lexicon was clearly superior. This is similar to DVD upconversion, the quality of which varies widely with the product doing it. I don't know the details of your equipment, but I find it unlikely you'd get the best sound using your computer as a transport if you're using its D/A converters as well.
