Technical and scientific discussion of amps, cables and other topics.

Kuncher...

There are two parts to the argument that reproducing high frequencies matter in themselves (as opposed to effects of equipment, e.g. the absence of brick wall filtering). First: there has to be content present to pass through the record playback chain and second, the presence of this content has to have an effect on the listeners' perceptions. Boyk has adequately demonstrated that the first hurdle has been passed.

The second hurdle is much more difficult to pass, because the principal impact of the extra bandwidth (claimed by non-skeptics) concerns the verisimilitude of the reproduction, not the tonal accuracy or musical enjoyment. This creates severe problems in designing "scientific" tests with sufficient statistical power. Worse, there is always the argument that the listeners are reacting to distortions in the equipment and not changes related to the content. This argument is exceptionally difficult to refute and involves subtle arguments. So, for example, if non-linear distortion causes audible beat tones between two ultrasonic sounds and this is caused by defects in the recording or playback the conclusion that the bandwidth is necessary is illegitimate. However, if the non-linearity is in the listener's hearing, then the high frequency content the difference heard is legitimate.

It is interesting to look at how difficult it can be to verify some of these things and also the notice the poor reception one expects to get from the Audio community.
