The advice I have seen is to level match at 100 Hz, 1 kHz and 10 kHz.I suppose it depends on what one proposes to accomplish. However, if a difference can be eliminated with a slight tweaking of tone controls, it seems reasonable to do so. Certainly cheaper.
I haven't checked whether your equipment has tone controls!
