Yes and it goes further, most home thermostats had a mercury tilt switch, large generators and motors sometimes had mercury wetted commutators and mercury wetted relays are still made.
Our "high wire" is 13,200Volts not to be confused with the ground "sky wire" on the top of the pole. One year a neighbor's tree grew out and made contact.
It was kinda cool seeing the glowing and sputtering, if it had fallen to the ground, those wires whip around and are scary but not as exciting as the 535,000V lines on the big towers a ways from here. Those light the sky when they fall (rare).
