Pick your poison -- they either digitize the signal and then attenuate in the digital domain (which is awful sounding) or else they use the Crystal CS3310, which is probably the worst sounding analog volume control known to man. A few of the newer units use the Burr-Brown equivalent to the CS3310, which is slightly less wretched sounding.

Yet "wretched sounding" isn't something I ever recall being said of Rowland's Coherence preamplifier.

Or is it true what they say about all those audio reviewers being on the take and would give a dog turd a glowing review as long as the manufacturer lines their pockets sufficiently?
