Anyone in Engineering, particularly Civil, Water, Soil etc, will know just how many formulas etc in current use were derived, "by empirical means".

Yes, there are attempts to use scientific method to reinforce or establish more provable formulas, but the "empirical" does not imply "quackery" in this area of work.. well.... we hope not ;-))
