Dawnrazor:
If you want a really cost effective way to do multichannel PC audio with active PC based DSP crossover, get a decent quality home theatre receiver.
Get one that has 6 or 7 discreet channels that have the same power rating but more importantly... 6 or 7 channel "External Decoder Input". My personal favorite HT receiver for this app is the Marantz units. I used a Marantz SR6200 for PC multichannel for a couple years, the sound quality was amazing - you'd never know you were listening through a receiver. Also good are Denon, and you can get one at ecost.com for a song (factory recertified at almost 1/2 price!) They also have the JVC Hybrid III digitial (PWM) amps. I have one for digital input, but do not know how they sound when using analog inputs. I could try this for you and report back... I am not sure I want this unit to do D/A conversion for me. Some guys swear by digital PWM amps, but usually when using digital inputs only, for an all digital chain - including amplification.
The thing about "external decoder" is that the amp switches off ALL DSP and equalisation, and the pre-amp signals from inputs go directly to the amp untouhced. But the volume control is retained!
To get better sound w/ volume control, prepar to spend 2.5 to 5 times as much for separate components... from what research I did a couple years ago.
Cheers,
Presto
